MicroCurrent VS MicroNeedling: Which Facial Treatment Fits Your Skin Goals?

Microcurrent and microneedling sound similar, but they serve different skin goals. If you’re deciding between them, the best place to start is with what you’d like to change-and how much recovery time you’re comfortable with. How many treatments you would like to have and what draws you to pursue a treatment result.

What is a microcurrent facial?

Microcurrent uses a gentle electrical current as part of the facial treatment. This current generates ATP in the body which translates to collagen production. Acne is usually a form of inflammation on the skin. Microcurrent is amazing with inflammation and puffiness. Lymphatic drainage is also accomplished with microcurrent. The decrease in puffiness is a great instant gratification with microcurrent. Tone and skin texture are also improved giving microcurrent a “cinderella treatment status” making it a great single treatment for preparation for events. You look amazing immediately after with NO DOWNTIME. The treatment is active but not painful. Most clients tolerate it very well and settings can be adjusted easily.

At SkinPro, microcurrent may be incorporated into a 60 or 90 minute customized facial when it fits your needs and the time you’ve booked. We also offer a dedicated Microcurrent Lift for clients who want to make it the focus of their visit. That treatment includes cool plasma and LED therapy. Microcurrent is a specialty of ours and we highly recommend it. If you have an irregular heartbeat, a history of seizures, or are pregnant microcurrent is not right for you.

Microcurrent is good for a single visit in regards to an event but it really shines with a start up and then maintenance. Some clients using microcurrent for years truly swear by it.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled punctures in the skin. Cosmetic needling is at a shallow depth with less downtime than medical needling. Microneedling is a great skin rejuvenator, helps address tone and texture, helps to brighten skin pigment and produces collagen. The downtime for microneedling is about 48 hours. Immediately after you will experience redness similar to a sunburn, some minor puffiness and redness. The following day you may experience some skin flaking and increased dryness. We provide a few days of recovery product and detailed instructions to clients who have this facial treatment. Unlike microcurrent this is not the best for a one and done kind of treatment. A series of 3 or more is best to begin and then a maintenance of one per quarter is suggested. This treatment is not painful as a topical anesthetic is used to temporarily numb the skin.

At SkinPro Studio, cosmetic microneedling is an advanced facial treatment that includes LED therapy. Before recommending it, we’ll talk through your skin concerns, relevant medical history, timing, and aftercare. Those with a history of keloids, active acne and inflamed eczema should likely avoid this treatment.

Microcurrent or Microneedling: how do you choose?

The good news is you don’t have to decide alone. We will walk you through all the concerns you have and give you a suggested treatment plan. In many cases microcurrent is a great way to manage skin between microneedling visits. Our membership option provides a 60 minute facial treatment each month and cosmetic needling is a smaller upcharge for members. If you are serious about skin this is a great choice. Not ready for that? A package is a good way to go, reduced costs and manageable time commitment. All new clients are suggested to start with a 60 minute facial treatment to get a good conversation going on what you would like and how we can help.
